|  | Last night was members night at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. Their big summer draw this year is "Budgie buddies" - a roomful of dozens of Budgerigars (aka Parakeets), Cockatiels, and other colorful bird from down under. You walk right in among them, buy a seed stick, and feed a bird... While they seem to be getting more trusting as the summer goes on, many are still wary enough that they will stay on a trusty branch and eat off your stick from there. But a few are getting brave enough to perch on the hand with the seedstick...
The particular big guy in this photo was not so shy - he saw me buying a seedstick from accross the room, flew over, and landed on my hat. Turns out my hat wasn't on tight enough to quite handle his weight... hilarity ensued, and Clayton snapped some photos.

I've ben doing it about 8 years now... hubby Clayton's first time volunteering was shortly after we met - and the first "this is the new guy I'm dating" picture I sent my folks was Clayton in full Darth Maul costume from that year. This year, just in time for our 5 year anniversary, he went back to the Dark Side to play Darth Vader. (he tells me a nightly 20 second Vader mask-donning is far less painful than a two hour Maul make-up session...)
