Photo AlbumRocky Mountains... and Sandy Dunes.Apr 17, '07 11:15 PM
for everyone
Great Sand Dunes National Park. a large field of sand dunes nestled against the Sangre de Cristo Range of the Rocky Mountains, just a couple hours from the Springs. Sand Dunes in the middle of the land-locked Rockies? yep... the whole experience is pretty surreal. The Simplistic science: fine sand is carried by the wind, and when the wind is interruupted by the mountains, it drops from the sky. In this particular location, Creeks surrounding the dune field ensure that as the dunes advance, the front edge is washed back to the backside by the creek, and blown back through again by the wind.... It's been a National Monument for a long time, but became a National Park in 2000.
Unlike many other National Parks, there are no trails you have to be careful not to step off of - there's no vegetation to kill, and no solid land to erode. Just wander over the dunes wherever you like. (locals take their sleds or some cardboard boxes to slide down in... and sometimes even their snowboards).
It's very fine soft sand, like on a well-groomed beach. wonderful to plop down on, but quite a workout trying to walk uuuup then down then uuup then down then upp some more to get to the top of the highest dunes for the best view.. I almost didn't make it - but the view from the top was incredible--as were many smaller views and sand features we saw along the way. (and it took about a quarter as long to get back down as it took to get up!)

Is that you dune boarding, Tish?

Lot of sand there. Heather keeps threatening to take me out there.

Very nice pictures. And I want to know if that's you as well.

Laugh... luckily its not Tisha... there were three College girls that drove down from Snowboarding in Vail and decided that Sand Boarding was just as easy... boy were they wrong.

Not me. I'd be scared spitless--This slope was *really* steep... I might do it in a sled.. or anything that's not strapped irrevocableto me, but not a snowboard. It was a group of 3 girls from Vail, probably 10 years younger then me (bless you for mistaking them for me!). And even one of the two we watched go down was pretty worried about it until the other one went first. (apparently sand is quite a lot slower than snow...)
But it was neat to watch from the safety of the sidelines!

It really is a neat place.. The stream is dry in September when we visited...

It was a darn cold stream to cross.

That looks like so much fun ! Is it like riding on snow? Always wanted to try it !

It actually wasn't use boarding, but from watching they seemed to be handling it just like snow, just alot slower, sand has a much higher friction ratio then snow.

So that is what evil looks like... Gee hee looks like a son of mine.

Watching them, it was actually really slow... slow and sticky enough they had some real control problems.
